About the Artist:

Juanita was born in Chicago, but has lived in the south for 25 years. While studying studio arts at the University of Georgia, she became interested in the combination of physical, practical and creative challenges of sculpture.

After working in a variety of media, stone has become her material of choice. During her time at the University of Georgia, no stone carving classes were available. Juanita remains today a largely self taught stone sculptor.

When working with stone, the artist has to be prepared to respond to the unique characteristics of each individual stone, sometimes altering the carving plan. For this reason Juanita views the process as a collaboration between artist and material.

Carving stone is a slow process that involves carefully choosing the stone, working with hammer and chisel to remove the unwanted parts and finally revealing a basic form. Once the form has taken shape, many hours are spent refining the form and creating the surface texture or textures.
